I have been asked often lately about whether it’s safe to travel. With all that’s going on in our own country and the world, that is a very fair question. To answer that question, let’s look at what the new travel policies mean and how they may affect your plans. Most of all, I am sharing how you can stay safe while traveling the world during these confusing times. After all, with me as your travel advisor, you have someone with you every step of the way, as you explore the world with confidence. And trust me, I am still traveling every chance I get😊
What’s New in 2025 Government Travel Policies?
There are new US border policies for travelers in place for 2025. These new policies were designed to make you safer while traveling. However, they do come with a few headaches if you are not prepared. You should expect stricter border screenings while traveling. The lines will be longer and the security personnel may ask you more in-depth questions about your travel. You may even be asked for your phones and laptops, so they can inspect them. Just keep in mind these screenings are making it safer for all of us to travel.
Updated Travel Advisories
New travel advisories have been put into place for 2025. Yes, you still have travel restrictions in 2025 to countries like Venezuela, Afghanistan, Cuba, North Korea, and a few others. However, visas are being restricted for those who want to visit countries like Laos, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Russia, and a couple others.
Thankfully, there are plenty of safe countries to visit in 2025! So, you won’t miss the restricted ones, as you explore safe destinations around the world.
Increased Visa Requirements
A few countries are now requiring more documentation, and even pre-approval, for international travelers. These requirements are even in place for short stays. While ETIAS, European Travel Information and Authorization System, is not something you will now need to worry about until 2026, you should still be aware of it. Of course, as your travel advisor, I will make sure you are aware of any requirements and documentation you will need for your vacation.
Travel Insurance is a Must
You used to be able to travel and not worry (too much) if you didn’t purchase travel insurance. I have blogged before about the reasons Travel Protection Insurance is necessary. Travel Insurance can and will help with if someone gets sick while traveling but it also can be used if trip changes or cancellations occur due to world events.
How to Stay Informed
I recommend keeping an eye on the US State Department Travel Advisory website, so you are up to date with all the information you need to know for your vacation.
What About Domestic Travel in the US?
The REAL ID deadline is here! You will no longer be allowed to fly unless you have a REAL ID driver’s license. The only exception is if you have a passport. You should be prepared to wait longer in TSA lines at the airport. TSA agents may ask more questions or conduct more random checks of your personal belongings.
Protecting Your Digital Privacy While Traveling
We all know that our life is basically all on our smartphones and tablets so, you need to protect them while traveling. I recommend backing up everything on your phone to the cloud. This ensures that nothing gets lost, or deleted by mistake. A VPN is now necessary when you are utilizing public Wi-Fi in airports, hotels, and cafes. Your information should not be considered private if you do not use a VPN while on public Wi--Fi.
Tips for Staying Safe and Prepared During Travel
STEP is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. This free service allows you to register your international travel, so you can receive travel updates. Plus, you will be contacted if there is an emergency in your destination.
Make Copies of Important Documents
It has always been important to make copies of important documents like your passport, visa, and travel insurance. However, nowadays, you should make extra copies, while also ensuring they are stored in the cloud. This way nothing goes missing when you really need it.
Travel isn’t off the table with these updated government travel policies. It just means that staying safe in 2025 means being informed, adaptable, and more organized than ever before.
